Gracie Abrams kept the color simple and let the shape do the work at the 2026 CFDA Fashion Awards. At the November 2 ceremony in New York, the singer wore a strapless black velvet gown by Colleen Allen, with a long draped panel giving the fitted silhouette an off-center flourish.

The actual event look appears in Abrams’ public Instagram carousel above. Its first image shows the gown against the CFDA backdrop, making the contrast between the close-fitting dress and the loose fabric over her arm easy to see.

The black velvet gown, up close

The neckline draws a clean horizontal line across the upper body. Below it, the gown follows a relatively narrow shape before reaching the floor. The drape interrupts that straight outline: fabric gathers across the front, falls over one arm and hangs separately from the skirt.

That asymmetry is the defining feature. It adds volume to one side without turning the entire dress into a wide silhouette. In the front-facing photograph, the loose panel also creates a second set of folds beside the smoother bodice, so the black fabric does not read as one flat surface.

At the hem, the fabric reaches the carpet and a dark pointed shoe is visible through a small opening. The overall impression is elongated, with most of the visual activity concentrated around the waist and arm.

A restrained finish around the neckline

A fine necklace sits above the strapless edge, leaving space between the jewelry and the dress. Coveteur’s event coverage identifies the accessory as a Chanel pearl sautoir. From the front, however, its effect is delicate: a light line against the gown’s much darker, heavier texture.

Abrams’ short, dark hair is swept away from her face in the opening event photograph. That clear outline keeps the neckline visible. The styling works through a few distinct elements rather than a stack of competing accessories.

The designer connection makes this more than a dress credit

Allen received the American Emerging Designer of the Year honor that evening, as confirmed by the CFDA’s official winners announcement. Abrams’ choice therefore put the designer’s work on the carpet at the same event where it was being recognized.

Our take: The boldness here comes from contrast—an exposed neckline against dense velvet, and a controlled column shape beside a freely hanging drape. It is a strong example of how a black gown can have a clear identity without relying on bright color or extensive embellishment.

For two very different approaches from the same awards night, compare Zoë Kravitz’s backless gold Saint Laurent look and Demi Moore’s structured GapStudio denim gown.
